To add a tool to Sakai site: From the course site: go to Site Info>Manage Tools> and follow prompts to add
Sarah Alhouti
17:22
Thank you Julie!
Paul Maloney
17:24
On Sakai Forum/Statistics, does student need to click on "mark as read" to show up in statistics as having read forum posts
Julie Cicilline
18:00
@Paul - I’ll look closer at that and follow up with you. My guess is yes.
Comfort Ateh
20:26
To your question Paul, I find Sakai not very authentic in providing stats on students' engagement. Students can simply open a document without engaging in it and the stats will show that the student engaged.
Comfort Ateh
21:57
What is the easiest way to share a document from onedrive to the whole class?
Comfort Ateh
22:21
What is the easiest way to share a document from onedrive to the whole class?
Julie Cicilline
22:33
@Comfort, it is definitely not exact - we don’t recommend it as an only method for grading. Also, the Statistics tool should be added at the beginning of the semester.
Julie Cicilline
23:17
@Comfort - you can link to a OneDrive document from Resources, Lessons, Announcements, or even an Assignment. Anywhere you can hyperlink
JoAnn Thomas
23:57
You can take attendance with Tophat- saves me time
Pam Snodgrass
25:29
Can you draw on an image on the screen or powerpoint?
Julie Cicilline
25:29
@JoAnn - Yes, stay tuned for TopHat training sessions in July. That is also a great tool for attendance.
Julie Cicilline
26:17
@Pam - Yes, Zoom has a built in annotation tool. For host and participants
Comfort Ateh
28:06
Can information on white board be saved?
Julie Cicilline
28:38
@Comfort - In Zoom, yes, but it is screen by screen.
Julie Cicilline
30:15
Reminder that we will also have a session about narrating and recording presentations (for creating asynchronous resources) during the Summer Institute. Wed. 6/24 @ 1 PM
Julie Cicilline
30:40
OneDrive and Teams training is at 1 PM today!
Comfort Ateh
30:51
I really hate the transition time between different tools! So time consuming and takes away instructional time. What are ways to be more effective in transitioning?
Sarah Alhouti
31:26
Agree comfort, these are cool tools but its time consuming to get the students used to each one
Mark Grabiner
32:15
Can Teams do what Perusall does where students can annotate and ask questions about specific lines in a pdf?
Julie Cicilline
32:17
@Comfort. Unfortunately that is an issue. Prepare your screens that you want to share in advance. Keep multiple browser windows or applications open, so you can move through them
Julie Cicilline
33:13
Teams has a file repository and chat, but it is not as ‘one screen’ as Perusall. Does that makes sense? We can talk one on one after the session.
Mark Grabiner
33:30
Got it
Sarah Alhouti
33:38
The best way for me to practice teams is to use it for research, but we don't allow access to people outside campus, will that aspect change in the neat future?
Julie Cicilline
34:06
@Sarah. Do not use all of these tools. Pick a few that work for you and stick with them. Especially for this semester.
JoAnn Thomas
34:10
So many choices- concerned that students will have to navigate many different platforms based on what each of us chooses to use.
Barbara Sullivan-Watts
34:22
how to get zoom breakout rooms to assign same students to same room multiple times?
Comfort Ateh
34:53
Great point Julie! I am sticking just with a few. Students get overwhelmed with many tools presented to them.
Julie Cicilline
34:58
@Barbara. That can be done. We can email you instructions from sakaihelp — just message us
Paul Maloney
35:23
Are students generally familiar with Microsoft Teams?
Gabriel Pivarnik
35:29
@Barbara . I have done that. It works great!
Comfort Ateh
36:14
Many of my summer 1 students have been challenged signing on team. So, we are using just zoom.
Julie Cicilline
36:56
@Paul - come to the 1:00 session today, if you can. It is new to students, but it has some great functions for collaborative work
Paul Maloney
37:31
will be there!
Pam Snodgrass
40:33
Is Sakai storage for courses being expanded to allow for video power points and presentations?
Jessica Buchanan
41:20
If we record a lecture via Zoom and post it online to be viewed after class, are we required to do close captioning?
Julie Cicilline
41:34
@Pam We do not recommend Sakai for video uploads. You can link to videos or we recommend OneDrive for hosting videos
Alyssa Lopez
42:18
Is there only OneDrive for hosting videos or does PC have access to something like Mediaspace?
Julie Cicilline
42:34
@Jessica - I recommend close captioning, or a transcript. If possible. If you do close caption, you need to record to Zoom Cloud
Julie Cicilline
42:49
@Alyssa - not at this time
Mark Grabiner
42:50
YouTube automatically generates captions and a transcript, not perfect but pretty good
j n
42:52
You can host videos of 15 minutes or less on you tube for free.
Jessica Buchanan
42:52
Do you have to do it manually?
Mark Grabiner
43:21
there is no time limit to youtube videos on free accounts
Julie Cicilline
43:21
@Jessica - Zoom has auto caption
j n
43:28
What kind of resources are available to students to help tempt their presentations on YouTube? OneDrive is too invasive.
Julie Cicilline
43:40
@Mark - yes
j n
43:52
*tempt—>put
Robert Hackey
44:22
how do you join the Remote Learning and Instructional Continuity site on Sakai?
Aaron D Colaiacomo
44:26
@jn students can either upload their videos to a personal youtube account or host them on OneDrive
Julie Cicilline
45:03
@Robert - it’s a joinable site, so you will just be prompted to login - bit.ly/ITDPsakai
j n
45:07
Yes, my question is, do they have any instruction on how to do that, or will professors need to teach them?
Aaron D Colaiacomo
45:09
@Robert https://bit.ly/ITDPsakai
Robert Hackey
45:27
I had great success with using Sakai chat this spring to facilitate online discussions of course readings. Lots of students who ordinarily didn't chime in in became significant contributors ;)
Julie Cicilline
45:47
@j n - all of our instructions are available on the remote learning sakai site
Sarah Alhouti
45:53
Thank you for sharing Robert!
Julie Cicilline
46:04

Robert Hackey
46:12
Perfect - thanks for sharing Aarom and Julie!
Mark Grabiner
46:31
PC students are also heavy users of GroupMe chatting app, you can have them use to it coordinate with each other and make a group that includes you for class discussions
Sarah Alhouti
46:40
Sorry for asking again, I really like Teams, will there be an ability to allow people without a PC email to join so I can practice with my coauthors
Julie Cicilline
47:03
@Sarah - you would have to ask IT - Diane or Donna
Christine Earley
49:25
How do we know if a video has an embed code?
Sarah Alhouti
49:28
sorry I missed the first part, what was the checklist called that was incorporate in the lesson page
Julie Cicilline
50:01
@Christine - embed code is usually available from the share button — for example, on YouTube.
Christine Earley
50:22
Thamks!
Christine Earley
50:26
Thanks
Julie Cicilline
50:45
Lessons is great!
Mark Grabiner
51:51
Is there any way to insert a hyperlink or resources link within a checklist item on lessons?
Julie Cicilline
52:14
@Sarah - in lessons from the ‘add content’ button, there is a selection for checklist
Julie Cicilline
52:42
@Mark - I think it is just text based, but I will look after the session
Mark Grabiner
53:18
Yeah, I tried, only seems to be text, seems like a big missed opportunity
Paul Maloney
57:11
thanks for the grid Shonna - a great help
Jessica Buchanan
57:18
If you record in zoom can you then post that to youtube?
Pat Kelly
57:46
This session was very helpful and the grid is great!. Thanks!
Shonna Ryan
57:49
Yes, you can!
Aaron D Colaiacomo
58:05
@mark - Lessons page checklist does not allow for web links
Pam Snodgrass
58:08
Where do you go to find that?
Sarah Alhouti
58:14
Agree with Pat, super helpful table than you!
Pam Snodgrass
58:19
the courses yesterday
Mark Grabiner
58:31
@Jessica, yes, Zoom to YouTube was what I did for absent students this Spring, had students comment on youtube for attendance credit
Pam Snodgrass
58:33
thank you
Aaron D Colaiacomo
58:38
@jessica - you can record the zoom session to your personal devicethen upload the file to youtube. you will want a youtube account
Jessica Buchanan
58:52
Thank you!
Alyssa Lopez
58:57
Are there privacy issues with youtube?
Alyssa Lopez
59:02
both in terms of our lectures and student work
Mark Grabiner
59:14
I keep my lectures unlisted on youtube and post direct links in Sakai
Julie Cicilline
59:16
@Alyssa - we recommend OneDrive
Julie Cicilline
59:32
@Mark - good YouTube advice
Alyssa Lopez
59:36
But one drive does not do captioning, right?
Aaron D Colaiacomo
59:56
@alyssa - youtube has a unlisted feature which only allows those with a link to access the material. OneDrive is more "secure"
Pam Snodgrass
01:00:01
how do you share one drive
David Orique
01:00:01
Can we use Youtube and avoid the advertising?
Alyssa Lopez
01:00:19
Thanks!
Mark Grabiner
01:00:36
I have the settings on my channel to try to turn off ads, not sure if it actually works
Aaron D Colaiacomo
01:00:42
@pam Once uploaded, at the top select the share option then copy the link and paste the link in your resource folder on Sakai
David Orique
01:00:54
The settings on Youtube or on OneDrive?
Mark Grabiner
01:00:58
youtube
